Things to do in Ksamil

When visiting Ksamil, there are plenty of exciting things to enjoy. Just 15 minutes away, Butrint National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, blending ancient ruins and natural beauty. Explore historic monuments like Roman villas and enjoy shaded, peaceful walks. For a more adventurous day, hop on a kayak or paddle boat to explore the nearby Ksamil Islands, known for their clear waters and great snorkeling.

A short drive to Saranda leads you to Lekursi Castle, where stunning views and lively sunsets await. You can also visit the Blue Eye, a mesmerizing natural spring, or take day trips to UNESCO towns like Gjirokastër and Berat, rich in history and culture. Now, let’s explore each of these activities in full detail, complete with tips and distances to help you plan your visit!

Butrint National Park

Butrint National Park is a must visit when staying in Ksamil, especially when you realize it’s just a quick 15-minute drive from Ksamil. This UNESCO World Heritage site feels like stepping into a time machine, where you can stroll through layers of history, surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful wetlands. It’s truly something special! The Butrint National Park covers 29 square kilometers and offers the perfect blend of fascinating ruins and natural beauty. Whether you’re a history buff or just love being outdoors, this place ticks all the boxes.

As you walk through the park, you’re literally treading on centuries of history. The centerpiece is the ancient city of Butrint, home to monuments that are beautifully intertwined with the landscape; think grand castles, old theaters and intricate Roman villas. One of the must-sees is the Triconch Palace, an ancient Roman villa that’s both stunning and packed with history. But of course, there’s so much to explore and it’s absolutely worth your time.

One of the best things about the park is how shady it is, perfect for a comfortable stroll, even on warm days. The paths aren’t too steep either, so it’s great for all ages and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some turtles chilling in the ponds (like we did)! Parking is free, though it can get a little tricky during busy times, so just be prepared for that. Whether you’re into history, nature, or just looking for a peaceful escape, Butrint National Park near Ksamil is a must visit. Don’t miss out!

Hop on a kayak, canoe or paddle boat and explore the Ksamil Islands!

Just off the coast, you’ll find four small, uninhabited gems: the Ksamil Islands. Sure, they’re small, but they’re lush, green and part of the protected Butrint National Park (we’ll get to that a bit later in this blog). The cool part? The nearest one, Isole Gemelle di Ksamil, is close enough to swim to! Most people, though, rent a kayak, canoe, paddle boat or even a small boat to check out the other islands a bit further out. And why should you? Well, the islands are rocky, the water is crystal clear and it’s a snorkeler’s dream out there!

We spent a few hours island hopping and even made a full circle around the biggest Ksamil Island. If you’re not too confident in your own paddling skills, no worries; you can book a guided paddle-boarding trip at sunrise or sunset, which is really fun to do! It’s no wonder these islands are a favourite among tourists; with calm, crystal-clear turquoise waters and beautiful sandy beaches, it feels like a little slice of paradise. You might even forget you’re still in Europe! If you’re staying in Ksamil, island hopping is a must (especially if you’ve got a few days to spare).

Lekursi Castle

If you’re aiming to level up your Instagram game or just want to catch an unforgettable sunset, Lekursi Castle in Saranda should definitely be on your travel bucket list! Perched on top of Lekursi Hill (about 19 km from Ksamil Village), this spot not only has historical charm but also amazing views of Saranda, Ksamil and even Corfu! The castle itself is pretty cool too; it’s a square fortress with two round towers that sit diagonally across from each other. And the drive up there? Just as stunning, with amazing scenery all the way. You could even stop by Natyra Restaurant for a breather and another chance to soak in the views. The beautiful destiny of the Lekursi Castle is to be a perfect place for watching sunsets over the amazing panorama of Saranda!

Once you step inside Lekursi Castle, it’s not just the history that’ll grab your attention. The castle hosts a restaurant with a huge outdoor terrace, perfect for a sunset dinner date. In the summer, this place is buzzing with both locals and tourists, all enjoying great food and drinks in a lively atmosphere (Yes, this is an Instagram/Tiktok hotspot). And if you’re lucky, you might catch some traditional Albanian folk music and dance, an awesome way to experience the local culture.

Around the castle, you’ll find the remains of the old village of Lëkurës, mostly behind the castle near the entrance. These ruins add a little extra mystery and history to your visit. Plus, at the entrance, there’s a display of 20th-century artillery, reminding you of more recent times. The hill is also dotted with Cold War-era bunkers, little echoes of Albania’s strategic importance back in the day. With all this natural beauty, history, and culture wrapped into one, Lekursi Castle is a must-visit.

Oh, and if you love a good hike, you can reach the castle on foot from the center of Saranda in about 90 minutes! Pro tip: Book the romantic “Lekursi Castle Sunset Tour“, it starts at just €19 per person!

The blue eye sightseeing in albaniaVisit the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër)

Just 35 kilometers away from Ksamil Village, you’ll find the captivating Blue Eye, or as the locals call it, “Syri i Kaltër.” This stunning natural wonder is a must-see for anyone visiting Albania. The spring gets its name because it looks like (you probably guessed it), it’s a bright blue human eye! With deep blue water at its center surrounded by vibrant shades of green and turquoise, it’s a real showstopper. Even cooler, the spring pumps out an impressive 18,400 liters of water every second, all while staying a brisk 10°C year-round.

The Blue Eye also feeds the Bistricë River and is thought to be over 50 meters deep, though no one’s really sure how deep it goes, adding to its mysterious vibe. Pretty awesome, right? With so many springs around the world, the Blue Eye of Albania definitely stands out. Want to dive deeper into this hidden gem? Check out our full article on the Blue Eye!

Berat in albania

Berat: The city of Thousand Windows

Just 220 km from Ksamil, Berat (fondly called the “City of a Thousand Windows”) is like stepping into a postcard from the past. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008, Berat’s rich architectural history is a blend of different cultures that have left their mark over the centuries. Strolling through its cobbled streets, exploring vibrant markets, sampling delicious local food and catching a sunset from the ruins of a Byzantine castle are just a few of the cool things to do here!

Berat is full of historic gems, including churches and mosques that are beautifully decorated with murals and frescoes, reflecting the city’s diverse religious and cultural past. The town is set on a mountain slope with the impressive Kala fortress from the 13th century towering over it. Himare

Located 67 km from Ksamil Village, you’ll stumble upon the charming seaside town of Himarë, nestled along Albania’s gorgeous coast. Once a quiet fishing village, it’s slowly gained popularity as a holiday spot, but still keeps its laid-back, chill vibe (perfect if you’re looking to escape the busier beach towns) What’s in store? the old town of dhermi in albania

Dhermi

Get ready to fall head over heels for Dhërmi (one of our favorite places in the country), a coastal gem often compared to Santorini for its picturesque white houses. Set 82 km away from Ksamil, Dhërmi offers an irresistible mix of natural beauty, lively culture and vibrant nightlife. Imagine a 2 km long beach, an enchanting old town and summer nights that come alive with music and dancing. It’s also home to the famous Kala Festival, which draws thousands of festival-goers every year. Stroll through the village, check out historic churches, or hit the scenic hiking trails!

Dhërmi is divided into two distinct zones: down by the coast, you’ll find the bustling beaches, promenade, hotels, restaurants, and lively clubs. If you’re a fan of sunbathing or water sports, the crystal-clear waters and white pebble beaches here are ideal. Further up the hill along the main road, there’s even more to discover. Beaches like Drimadhes (Drymades) and Jali are alive with summer clubs, making this area a hotspot for young people, especially with international DJs playing throughout the season. The popular Kala Festival draws a growing crowd each year. Whether you begin your night with a meal on the promenade or dive straight into the beach club scene, Dhërmi is undeniably one of Albania’s trendiest destinations!

The palase beach at the green coast in albania

Palase

Plus, there’s the famous Green Coast Resort, a luxurious getaway with everything from fancy hotels to private villas. Oh, and did we mention it’s got Albania’s only Blue Flag beach? Vlore / Vlora

Vlorë is one of those places in Albania you just can’t skip, no matter where your trip starts; you *have* to check it out at least once! This lively coastal city is full of color – literally, with its brightly painted buildings – and the old town buzzes with energy. The 130-kilometer drive to Vlore shouldn’t put you off; it’s an ideal chance to pair it with other incredible locations, as described above, for a more complete experience before reaching Ksamil.

Ksamil beaches: the best spots to visit!

Ksamil is a paradise-like beach destination in the south of Albania and no visit is truly complete without a day spent lounging at one of its stunning beaches. Sure, the Albanian Riviera has plenty of beautiful beaches, but Ksamil has that extra something; it feels like you’ve stumbled onto a secret slice of the Maldives without the long-haul flight or crazy expenses. The coastline here is absolutely stunning, with water so clear it could easily be mistaken for the Maldives.

There’s a mix of everything: soft sandy stretches, quiet pebbled spots, and hidden little coves.Walk along the wooden docks, swim (or Kayak) out to one of the tiny uninhabited islands just off the shore or just kick back at one of the seaside restaurants and bars, there’s no wrong way to enjoy this little slice of heaven! Below, we’ll guide you through the best beaches in and around Ksamil:

Summer in Ksamil is awesome, but beaches can get packed in July and August. To secure your loungers, try booking a sunbed the day before you go

the beach of the albania resort like maldives: arameras beach resort

Arameras Beach

Looking for a sandy beach where the loungers aren’t packed in like sardines? Head to Arameras Beach, just south of Ksamil. Sure, at 2,500 lek for two beach beds, it’s a bit pricier for Albania, but compared to other beach clubs in the area, this one was hands down our favorite!

It had a super chill vibe with nice, quiet music, a rare treat in Ksamil! The view is stunning too, with the Greek island of Corfu right across the water. There’s a scenic road that winds down to a small forest parking lot right in front of the beach (and yes, it’s free—bonus points!).

The facilities were clean, from the changing rooms to the toilets, which is always a plus. The sandy beach of Arameras is perfect for families, with shallow, clear water about 3–4 meters deep, ideal for kids.

Just keep in mind that you’ll be sharing the beach with guests from the Arameras Beach Resort, one of the top spots to stay in southern Albania! Curious about the resort? Check out our full article, including the best deals for Arameras Beach Resort!

coco beach at ksamil village in albania

Coco Beach

Coco Beach is the perfect spot to kick back and relax if you’re looking to escape the crowds and enjoy a more laid-back vibe. With comfy beach beds starting at just $9 USD a day (around 900 lek), you get to soak up the sun without the chaos of the more packed beach clubs. There’s still good music (not too loud like at most beach clubs in Ksamil) and a mix of options to suit your mood; whether you’re swaying in an egg chair, lounging in a cabana or chilling at the Coco Beach!

The beach is well-kept, and the umbrellas are spaced out enough to give you a little privacy, which is a nice touch. The restaurant? Casual, right on the beach and serves up some seriously delicious mussels and massive salads! The service is quick and prices are pretty standard for the area. So, if you’re looking for a quiet spot in Ksamil Village to unwind, Coco Beach is definitely a place to check out! With its own private beach and cozy loungers, you can enjoy great seafood or simply chill with a drink, watching the sunset over the Ionian Sea and the Ksamil Islands. Total beach bliss!

the beautiful shores of ksamil in the south of albania

Ksamil Beach

Ksamil Beach is, in our opinion, not the best of Ksamil’s beaches. Don’t get us wrong, it’s beautiful, but it can also be really crowded and the prices for sunbeds and food are quite high compared to other beaches in Albania. It’s a gorgeous spot with music playing all day, stunning lodges dangling over the water and that unreal blue, clear water. The only problem? It gets way too packed and in July and August, prices shoot up.

While it’s a breathtaking beach, you’ll only find paid umbrellas. There are a few small patches away from the umbrellas where you can chill for a bit, but they’re hard to find. Ksamil Beach is a tiny bit overrated and those Instagram videos make it look better than it actually is.

the beaches at the albanian riviera in ksamil

Bora Bora Beach

On the other side of Ksamil Beach, you’ll find Bora Bora Beach, known for its lively vibe with beach bars and water sports. The facilities like showers, changing rooms and toilets are free and clean, which is always nice. The sunbeds are spaced out decently, so you’re not too close to your neighbors, but the beach itself could be cleaner. There are only two big trash cans near the exit, and they’re often full. The beach has soft sand and is especially suitable for families with young children since the water is shallow (about 5-7 meters out).

You’ve got three sunbed options ranging from $20 to $30 per parasol (for two beds). It’s a busier beach, mainly because of the shallow water and few rocks, so expect lots of kids around. While Bora Bora Beach is one of Ksamil’s most popular spots, it’s not really our top choice. In the high season, it can get pretty crowded and the prices are steeper compared to other, quieter beaches nearby. That said, renting a boat or booking a ski tour to the Ksamil islands is easy and can bring some excitement to your day, thanks to Renato’s handy rental spot on the beach!

Pulebardha beach in ksamil albania

Pulëbardha Beach

If you’re looking to escape the crowds, Pulëbardha Beach is the perfect spot, just a little outside of Ksamil. Tucked away between rocky shores and greenery, this beach has some of the clearest water you’ll find in the area. It’s definitely one of the nicer beaches around, with beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere. The water’s perfect for swimming, although the beach itself is pebbly, so keep that in mind!

Pulëbardha Beach feels a bit more secluded, which adds to its charm and the surrounding cliffs make it a great spot for photos, it’s honestly hard to capture just how stunning this place is in a picture! To get there, you can take the bus between Butrint and Saranda, which runs every hour. The driver will drop you off on the main road and from there, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the beach. If you’re driving, be prepared for an unpaved road down to the beach, but it’s totally worth it once you arrive!

Monastery Beach (Plazhi i Manastirit)

One of the coolest beaches you can find near Ksamil has to be Monastery Beach. This hidden gem is just south of Saranda, perfect for when you want a break from the more touristy vibe of Ksamil. It’s only a quick 15-20 minute drive away and when you get there, you’ll be greeted by stunning white sands and blue waters that make you feel like you’ve stepped right into a Pirates of the Caribbean scene!

The beach itself is a mix of grey pebbles, sunbeds and umbrellas. Tucked into the rocks is a cozy little restaurant where you can grab a drink or enjoy some fresh seafood and local dishes. Up in the hills above the beach is the Monastery of Saint George, which is where this slice of paradise got its name. From the top, you get some amazing views over the Ionian Sea and the Monastery Beach – definitely worth checking out!

How to get there? Getting to Monastery Beach is easy; just hop on the bus that runs between Butrint and Saranda and ask the driver to drop you off at the stop for Monastery Beach. From there, it’s a short walk down to the shore. The whole trip will set you back about 100 LEK (~ 1 USD) a total bargain for such a beautiful beach, right?

Lori Beach

Lori Beach is a quieter spot: it’s a small beach with plenty of space between sunbeds, making it ideal for families (there were loads!). The sand extends right into the water, so it’s easy to wade in and the shallow areas are perfect for kids to play. The vibe here is really calm, relaxing and when you are getting hungry you can strike down at the restaurant. Lori Beach has a nice laid-back, Ibiza-esque vibe, oh and btw: There’s also free parking at Lori Beach!

Ksamil nightlife: Best places to drink, dance, and relax

Ksamil has a lively nightlife scene with plenty of cool (beach) clubs where you can chill with a cocktail or dance the night away. Just keep in mind that things start to quiet down between 2 and 3 AM because loud music is a no-go after that (gotta respect the hotels and nearby residents). It’s not the place for massive, all-night raves or the 24/7 party vibes you’d find in other European hotspots, but you can still have a great time with the Ksamil nightlife scene. and we’re here to tell you about the best spots to do just that:

Poda Loungebar in Ksamil

Poda Ksamil

One of the hottest spots to party in Ksamil is Poda Beach Bar, where you can dance the night away until around 3 AM. But it’s not just about the nightlife, during the day, it’s the perfect spot to chill, grab some food, and sip on tasty cocktails. Once the sun sets, they roll out the high tables and the party kicks into full gear at Poda Ksamil!

You can order everything from cocktails and wine to Heineken, or just stick to soft drinks if that’s more your vibe. In the evenings, there’s often a DJ spinning a mix of Albanian beats and international hits. The best part? The party happens outside, right by the water, making it all the more fun when the weather’s warm! So, ready to party at Poda Ksamil?

Bianco Club Ksamil

Bianco Club Ksamil is one of the newest spots in town, and during the high season, it’s open every day until 3 AM. What’s cool about this place is that it’s got multiple levels, so you can party both indoors and outdoors. Located right at the edge of the beach, it’s decked out in a chic Ibiza-style vibe with stunning views of the beach and a rooftop lounge area.

The highlight of the Bianco Club? Definitely the rooftop views and great music! The only downside? Cocktails are a bit pricier here compared to other places in Ksamil. But aside from that, it’s an awesome place to party. So, join the fun at Bianco Club Ksamil under the neon lights for a night full of laughter, dancing and unforgettable memories!

Simple Lounge

Simple Lounge is hands down the best cocktail bar in Ksamil; It’s a beautiful bar with a fantastic team behind the bar. We’ve tried a few spots, but this one really stands out!

The service is fantastic and the staff are super friendly. The cocktails? Packed with flavor and totally hit the spot and prices are fair too!

During happy hour (5 PM to 11 PM), cocktails are just 500 Lek (€5), so really, no complaints there (we even got a few drinks on the house). The music is a bit loud, but it just adds to the vibe, we highly recommend stopping by for a drink (or a few!)!

Africana Beach Club

If chilling with a cocktail in hand while watching the sunset sounds like your vibe, then Africana Beach Club in Ksamil is totally where you need to be! The location? Spot on. The sunbeds? Super comfy (with plenty of shade, which is a bonus). And the sunsets? Just chef’s kiss. Oh, and the bartender? Total superstar—the cocktails were next-level! The only tiny thing? Another cool touch? There are stairs to get into the water, so no sandy feet post-swim!

We absolutely loved the relaxed atmosphere, the tasty food and how genuinely friendly everyone was. The music wasn’t blasting, which was a big win too! And don’t even get me started on the beach. it’s absolutely stunning; easily the best beach club in Ksamil if you ask us! Africana Beach Club wraps up at midnight, making it the perfect spot to soak up Ksamil’s vibes without going too wild.

Ksamil restaurants: the best places to eat!

Ksamil is a food lover’s paradise, with charming family-owned spots lining the beach promenade, each beautifully decorated and inviting. Whether you’re after a beachfront taverna with stunning water views or a cozy romantic restaurant tucked away in town, Ksamil has endless options for tasty meals and drinks. While seafood and meat are popular choices, there are also plenty of vegetarian dishes to keep everyone happy. Here are some must-try restaurants in Ksamil:

Mussel house in Ksamil

Mussel house

If you’re in Ksamil Village, Mussel House is the spot to hit up, hands down. Not only is it famous for its fresh, delicious mussels, but the setting is unbeatable – the Mussel House sits on an open platform right by the water, so you’re basically dining with a sea view. We were lucky enough to have Fredi as our server and he went all out, showing us the freshest catch of the day. He even recommended a mussel dish that was absolutely to die for!

You’ve gotta try the mussels in all the different sauces (seriously, they’re next level), but don’t forget to leave some room for the risotto – rich flavors, big portions and just all-around awesome food. It’s a bit out of town on the way to some other beaches, approximately 15 minutes with a taxi. If you’re in Ksamil, this is one place you definitely want to check out!

If you’re craving the freshest mussels around, why not hop on a mussel sailing tour? You’ll get to learn how they’re harvested, pick your own blue mussels straight from the sea, and then taste a few different mussel dishes right on the boat. It’s a fun and tasty adventure all in one!

Guvat Bar Restorant

We stopped by for lunch at Guvat Bar Restorant one day and enjoyed it so much we came back for dinner two days later. Honestly, the vibe at sunset is something special here, it’s a great spot for a nice dinner if you’re in Ksamil – lovely atmosphere, chill music, super friendly staff and the view is hard to beat!

The staff had some great recommendations and the house white wine really hit the spot. Portions were big, and everything we tasted – even the desserts – was top-notch.

The lamb stew stole the show at dinner; it was super tender and bursting with flavor. Oh, and if you’re into beer, you can even order a German Flensburger to go with your meal!

Bar Restorant Korali

The location of Bar Restorant Korali is perfect, the service is quick and super friendly and the food: just awesome! You can even see the open kitchen, which is fun and shows how clean they keep things. We had a lovely lunch by the bay, keeping it light with salads, grilled peppers and cheese, plus half a liter of wine. When we came back for dinner, it was just as great. The food was delicious and the waiters were professional but warm.

The view? Stunning! We had tzatziki with toast, meatballs, beefsteak, fries, seafood linguini, fried seafood, and a village salad. Everything was fresh, well-cooked, and super tasty. It’s right on the edge of the beach, so it’s not too crowded. The atmosphere is really chill but still a bit fancy. The staff were all lovely and spoke good English. And sitting right by the water? The perfect touch right?

What is the best time to visit Ksamil?

Ksamil has several beautiful white-sand beaches, though many are privately managed by beachfront restaurants. In the peak of summer, it gets so crowded you can barely see the sand, so June or September is your best bet if you want to enjoy some space with your sunbed and umbrella. Another thing to consider is the weather: Albania’s summers can get pretty toasty, with temperatures climbing up to 40°C. So, if you’re not a fan of intense heat, it might be best to avoid the peak summer months (if possible).

Is Ksamil expensive?

Is Ksamil expensive? That depends largely on the beach, restaurant, or type of accommodation you choose. When it comes to beaches, expect to pay between $10 and $20 per day for two sunbeds and an umbrella, which is fairly reasonable considering the comfort and exclusivity. As for dining, Ksamil is generally quite affordable; a meal for two, including drinks and main courses, typically costs around $25 – $35. In particular, drink prices (alcohol) are comparable to those in the UK.

You can find nice hotels in Ksamil for around $50 per night, while staying outside the town in hostels can cost as little as $15 to $20 per night. Although Ksamil has become more expensive in recent years and the average prices are higher than in many other Albanian coastal towns, it is still significantly cheaper compared to most other European destinations. So, is Ksamil expensive? Our honest opinion; no!

Ksamil or Himare - what is the best choice?

Trying to decide between Ksamil or Himare for your next holiday in Albania? First of all: both are stunning, but it all comes down to what kind of vibe you’re after. If you’re in the mood for something lively and social, Ksamil should be at the top of your list. It’s got that upbeat, trendy beach scene with cool beach bars, fun activities and a buzzing nightlife. Think of it like a hidden gem version of popular European hotspots, but with its own unique twist.
