Things to do in Himare

Around Himare, there’s a lot to see and do, with plenty of fun activities available. Explore the historic Porto Palermo Castle for panoramic views and a refreshing swim in the bay, then stroll the quaint cobblestone streets of old Himarë and visit the picturesque Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus. For the adventurous, a boat tour from Himarë Beach offers a chance to discover secluded beaches and hidden historical places like the submarine tunnel from the cold war. Below, we discuss the best activities, attractions, and day trips from Himarë in full detail:

Explore the Porto Palermo Castle

Porto Palermo Castle, just a quarter-hour drive from the heart of Himarë, situated on a peninsula in Port Palermo Bay, which was once entirely separated from the mainland. Built in the early 19th century and used as a prison after World War II, the castle offers a glimpse into Albania’s Ottoman past. The interior features stark stone walls and rooms left unfurnished, preserving its historical essence. We recommend taking the narrow path to the left of the entrance, which leads to a breathtaking view. Especially if you want to enjoy the (romantic) sunset, this is the perfect spot!

Also you can visit the top of the triangular fort, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the sea and surrounding mountains. The castle is open daily from 9 AM to 4 PM and entry costs just 300 Lek (about 3 euros). After exploring Porto Palermo Castle, why not take a refreshing dip in the beautiful waters of Porto Palermo Bay? We did and on those warm days, it’s an absolute must-do! And if you get hungry, you can head over to the Porto Palermo Restaurant right in front of the castle. They offer a range of tasty seafood, but if something like spaghetti is on your mind, you’re also in for a real delight!

We have a great tip for you in store to enhance your visit to this sightseeing: Explore Porto Palermo Bay by kayak or SUP. Glide towards hidden caves, secluded beaches, and savor a distinct view of Ali Pasha’s Castle from the sea. You can book this adventure for 49,- per person!

Visit the Himara old town

We had a fantastic time exploring the Himare old town and its castle ruins and highly recommend it. The walk from the new part of Himara takes about 45 minutes and, though it’s quite uphill, the journey is beautiful and offers a glimpse into local life along the way. Keep in mind that on hot days, visiting the old town can be quite challenging due to the heat (there’s little to no shade during the uphill walk). We appreciated the bit of exercise, it’s something we always enjoy. And to be honest, we were pretty skeptical about trekking up to the old historic part of Himarë before we left.

The thought was, “It’s just a few ruins and a view, right?” But oh, how wrong we were! The Himara old town, perched atop a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea, was something out of a fairytale, especially in the early morning or during the sunset! The Himare old town, with its cobblestone streets, feels authentic and untouched by the tourist crowds, making it incredibly peaceful. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, showcasing all of Himarë and several surrounding beaches. Fun fact: there are still people living in the old town of Himara, isn’t that cool?

We recommend making a stop at the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus while exploring the area. This charming church features well-preserved wall frescoes that are worth seeing, though it might take a bit of searching to find. The church, set against old stone structures and wildflowers with sweeping sea views, provides a serene setting. Good to know: If walking isn’t your thing, no worries! For just a few bucks (about 3 or 4 USD), you can easily grab a taxi and ride straight to the Old Town without breaking a sweat.

Gjirokastër

Gjirokastër is a charming mountain town with old stone houses and cobbled streets that give it a unique, historic feel: it’s absolutely one of the highlights of Albania for many reasons. With its Ottoman houses, impressive castle, scenic views and last but not least: cozy restaurants with delicious traditional food: Gjirokastër offers a peaceful journey through history you don’t want to miss! As you walk through its winding streets, you’ll come across traces of its rich past at every turn. This UNESCO World Heritage site, known as the “City of a Thousand Steps,” features a large castle with stunning views over the Drinos Valley. The town’s white manors and colorful Albanian carpets reflect its local traditions and history.

For those interested in exploring the past, the Zekate and Skenduli houses offer a glimpse into life centuries ago. Gjirokastër’s well-preserved Ottoman architecture is a key reason for its UNESCO status and while some parts of the old town have been restored with shops and restaurants, a short walk away, you’ll find quieter streets where the old buildings remain untouched. At the bottom of the hill, you’ll find modern Gjirokastër, where most residents live, though it’s not as appealing for visitors.

At the highest point of Gjirokastër, you’ll find the 12th-century castle, offering stunning views over the city. Inside, there’s a military museum that delves into the area’s history. It’s best to visit early in the morning or late in the day to avoid the summer heat, and sunset offers the most beautiful light. Upon entering, you’ll spot an old American plane with mysterious origins. The castle’s most striking feature is the clock tower, perched prominently on the hill. While the castle itself may not be the most exciting, the view alone makes it worth a visit, especially if you’re interested in Gjirokastër’s history. Read our full article about Gjirokastër with all the ins- en outs you have to know before visiting!

If you’d like to join a guided tour through Gjirokaster and see all the key attractions, you can book a three-hour tour for just €14.99 per person.

Berat in albania

Berat

Berat, located 150 km away from Palase, is known as the city of a thousand windows, it’s a place that feels like stepping back in time. From a distance, the white Ottoman-style houses seem to cling to the steep mountainside, their windows almost appearing connected. This UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized in 2008, showcases a unique blend of architectural styles influenced by the many civilizations that have left their mark over the centuries. You can spend your time wandering through the stone streets, browsing local markets, tasting the delicious food and enjoying a beautiful sunset from the ruins of a Byzantine castle.

Like many towns in Albania, Berat is a historic gem full of churches and mosques adorned with murals and frescoes. The town is built into the side of a mountain, with the castle, known as the Kala, perched on top. Up there, you’ll find museums, cozy hotels, restaurants, and even local homes. A visit to Berat wouldn’t be complete without seeing its impressive castle. This 13th-century fortress is the largest in Albania and its ancient walls hold the story of Berat’s past. What’s unique about this castle is that people still live within its walls, so you’ll discover homes, shops, and market stalls in the castle quarter, giving it a village-like feel.

And of course, we can’t forget the food. The Albanian cuisine here is a shining example of the Mediterranean diet, rich in vegetables, fruits and olive oil, with only a modest amount of meat and dairy. This diet has contributed to Albania’s high life expectancy despite being one of Europe’s poorer countries. The blue eye sightseeing in albania

The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër)

The Blue Eye, or “Syri i Kaltër” as it’s known in Albanian, is a stunning natural spring in southern Albania and without a doubt, one of the country’s top attractions. Located just 90 km from Palasë, this marvel is more than just a spot to visit, it’s a spectacle. The name ‘Blue Eye’ comes from its resemblance to a vibrant blue eye, surrounded by shades of blue and green, making it look eerily like a human eye. The spring forcefully pushes water to the surface at an impressive rate of 18,400 liters per second and despite the inviting look, the water remains a chilly 10 degrees Celsius all year round… brrr!

This natural wonder serves as the primary source of the Bistricë river and is known to be over 50 meters deep. However, the exact depth of the Blue Eye remains a mystery, pretty cool when you think about it, right? There are millions of water sources around the world, so what makes Albania’s Blue Eye different? You can find out all this and much more in our full article on the Blue Eye of Albania!

Dhërmi, just 4 km away, is known for its white pebble beaches, lively nightlife and scenic hiking trails. Saranda, located 73 km from Palasë, is bustling with life along its vibrant promenade, boasting historical gems like Butrint and the famous Blue Eye spring.

Vlora (our favorite) blending historical intrigue with natural beauty, is home to the Independence Monument and the serene Karaburun Peninsula. Lastly, Ksamil, often dubbed the “Maldives of Europe,” captivates with its crystal-clear blue waters, trendy beach clubs and beautiful coastline. Below, we’ll guide you through each of these unique places near Palase, highlighting all the details!

Dhermi

Get ready to fall in love with Dhërmi, a village often compared to Santorini for its picturesque white houses and located just 15 km from Himara. Dhërmi boasts a 2 km stretch of beach, a historic old town and vibrant nightlife, offering you a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural activities. The village is home to popular summer nightclubs and hosts the well-known Kala Festival. You can wander through ancient churches, hike scenic trails and enjoy fresh seafood at local taverns. With its crystal-clear waters and white pebble beaches, Dhërmi attracts both sunbathers and water sports enthusiasts (like us!),

Dhermi is divided into two main sections: the coastal area, which features beaches, a promenade, hotels, restaurants, bars, and several nightclubs. The upper part of the village, located along the main road, is also worth exploring. In Dhërmi and the nearby beaches of Palasë, Drimadhes (Drymades) and Jali, you’ll find popular summer clubs that draw large crowds, especially during the warmer months. These venues often host internationally renowned DJs throughout the summer.

One of the major events is the Kala Festival, which draws between 3,000-5,000 attendees and continues to grow in popularity among young people. The promenade is particularly appealing, where you can start with a great meal at one of the many restaurants and then join the lively beach club scene. This and much more makes Dhërmi one of Albania’s top destinations, and within 30 minutes from Himarë you can be here as well!

Beyond its lively energy, Sarande is also the perfect base to explore the ancient ruins of Butrint and the enchanting Blue Eye spring. Whether it’s day or night, this city exudes an irresistible charm that you simply must experience for yourself… we fell in love with it straight away!

The waterfront promenade, known as Rruga Jonianet, is a great spot for a pleasant walk, especially during tourist season when cruise ships dock and the city comes alive. Our favorite part of Sarande! Along the boulevard, you’ll discover small shops selling local goods like honey and handmade jewelry. If you are seeking relaxation, grabbing an ice cream and resting under the shade of a palm tree is a perfect way to spend a sunny day. If you prefer to soak up the atmosphere from a comfortable seat, there are plenty of cafés and bars along the waterfront offering fantastic views of the Ionian Sea, though prices might be a bit higher given the prime location.

Looking for a great place to eat? Head to Haxhi, a cozy and hidden gem just off the promenade. Explore the most beautiful beaches around Himare

A trip to Himare isn’t complete without spending a day at one of its many picturesque beaches. Himare itself is split into two distinct bays, the first (Plazhi i Himarës) is a hub of activity, featuring a lively boulevard lined with numerous hotels and restaurants. The second (Potami Beach) bay offers a more tranquil setting with a spacious beach that’s ideal for sunbathing and relaxing. But also around Himara, you’ll discover some of the most stunning beaches in Albania, known for their crystal-clear azure waters and pristine white sands. Down below we uncover the best beaches in and around Himare:

Himare Beach (Plazhi i Himarës)

Himare Beach, also known as Plazhi i Himarës, is situated in the center of town, it’s the main beach of the town. Along this beach, a beautiful promenade brimming with restaurants, supermarkets, ice cream vendors and souvenir shops invited us to stroll and indulge. This area transitions into a quaint pebbled beach, where both locals and tourists gather to enjoy the stunning turquoise waters. As one of the busiest spots during the summer, the beach bustles with life, though it does get crowded and numerous boats often dock here.

Despite the hustle, Himare offers a more laid-back atmosphere compared to Sarandë and boasts a wider variety of activities compared to smaller locales. The water here is clean and serene, providing a respite that feels less commercialized than other popular destinations like Ksamil. Himare Beach is equipped with showers, although the adjacent section near Orzo bar lacks this amenity. For those seeking a quieter spot, Potami Beach presents a lovely alternative. Located just a short walk down the beach to the left when facing the sea, this smaller beach offers tranquility and a picturesque view of Himarë Bay.

Good to know: In the middle of the beach, you’ll find a vendor renting out essentials like paddle boards, boats and umbrellas, we picked up an umbrella for the day just for 5 Euros, a fair deal if you ask us (especially if you compare it to Ksamil). Be aware that parking is available only through the local paid parking lots, the rate was 300 lek for three hours.

Gjipe Beach

Look for a day away from the crowds? Gjipe Beach is your go-to spot, located a 40 minute drive from Himare. Gjipe Beach lies beyond the usual tourist tracks, situated in the Gjipe Canyon. This makes it one of the quieter beaches in Albania, especially given the slight trek required to get there. It’s about a 20-30 minute walk from the parking area to the beach, which can be a bit challenging but absolutely rewarding. The walk from the car park to the beach is peppered with viewpoints that offer beautiful panoramas of the coast below. Just talking about it makes us want to go back already!

Alongside the sandy stretches, you’ll find two beachside restaurants that dish up fresh seafood and cool drinks. Need a recommendation? For a taste of local flavors, try Restorant Rrapi Gjipe, renowned for its delicious octopus salad and fresh mussels, it’s a culinary experience you definitely don’t want not to miss! Back to the beach itself: Once you park your car at the Gjipe Car Park, which will set you back about 400 Lek, it’s a scenic 2 km walk down to the beach on a gravel path. The beach itself, although smaller compared to others in the area, feels intimate and is ideal for those of us who prefer a less crowded setting.

For a full day of relaxation, sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, with a whole day’s setup costing around 1000 Lek. It’s a perfect spot to lounge and enjoy the natural beauty around you. Good to know: For those making the trip from Himare or even from farther places like Tirana, Saranda or Vlorë, you can drive to Gjipe Car Park (like we mentioned before) or hop on a local bus, known as a ‘Furgon’.

The palase beach at the green coast in albania

Palasa Beach

Exploring the lesser-known Palasë Beach along Albania’s scenic coastline is a delightful experience, just 20 kilometers away from Himarë. Tucked away from the usual tourist trails, this beach is a real find with its clear, aqua waters that could easily hold their own against the more famous shores of Italy and Greece. The combination of a pebbly beach and larger stones beneath the water adds a remarkable clarity to the sea. When you arrive, the first things you’ll notice are the beautiful water and the convenient amenities.

For about 500 lek (around $5.50 or €5), you can rent a lounge chair and an umbrella for the day, setting yourself up for some quality relaxation. The beach bars (like Bohemian) create a relaxed environment with their selection of music and beverages, ideal for a laid-back day. Whether you want to bask in the sun, enjoy a cool drink, or get lost in a book, Palasë Beach caters to all tastes. And if you’re a sports enthusiast, you’re in luck, some bars even broadcast live sports events such as Premier League Football!

If you’re after a bit more excitement, Palasë Beach also offers activities like paragliding, boat rentals, and scuba diving. A useful tip: consider visiting in June or September when the prices for food, activities and beach rentals are generally lower than in the busier months of July and August.

The beautiful promenade of dhermi in albania

Dhermi Beach

Just south of the eponymous coastal town, Dhermi Beach is a special place with its expansive soft sand, located 20 kilometers from Himarë. The beach is divided into public and private areas, yet there’s ample space to ensure it never feels overcrowded – a common concern (especially) in the south of Albania. The delightful promenade, lined with palm trees and surrounded by a variety of restaurants and bars, fills the air with lively music, making Dhermi Beach one of our favorite spots in Albania for several reasons.

Relaxing at one of the charming beach bars, sipping a pina colada while overlooking a sea of colorful umbrellas set against the backdrop of majestic mountains, is truly a breathtaking sight we have to say! What makes this beach particularly unique are the trendy beach clubs, modern and hip, adorned with bean bags. Add to that the bustling promenade, replete with excellent dining and bar options and a diverse range of accommodations, and you’re set for a top-notch vacation!

From Himara, a 30-minute drive will get you to Dhermi town. If you don’t have a car, no worries! Catch a Furgon bus to the town, and from there, either trek down the 2-kilometer path or take a taxi directly to Dhermi beach!

Jale beach

Jale Beach captivates with its vividly blue waters that seem almost surreal, despite what photos might suggest, experiencing it firsthand is the only way to truly grasp its beauty! We honestly thought beforehand that the photos gave a good indication of how it would look, but in reality, it’s actually even more beautiful. Located in a picturesque half-moon shaped bay, Jale is flanked by hills cloaked in lush olive groves, adding a serene backdrop to its charm. Its clear waters make it a prime spot for swimming, snorkeling, diving and even boating. The local atmosphere is relaxed, with a family-friendly vibe that sets it apart from the busier spots further south like Ksamil.

Jale Beach actually comprises several interconnected beaches, allowing you to choose your preferred spot to relax… cool! Surrounding Jale Beach, numerous fantastic restaurants and bars enhance the experience. Among them, Favela Jale (our favorite) stands out with its stylish decor, exceptional food, and creative presentations, but the staff’s passion and friendliness make you definitely want to go back again.

You can enjoy the comfort of renting an umbrella with two sunbeds for about 10-15 euros. The beach bars play soothing tunes and close to the Lemon Bar, a volleyball net is set up for some friendly matches if you are into it! From Jale Beach, one can take boat trips to some of Albania’s most secluded spots, like the stunning Gjipe Beach, accessible only by boat or a challenging hike (like mentioned before). Insider tip: the staircase to the left of the beach, leading to the top of the surrounding hills, where one can capture breathtaking sunset views… you will definitely make your friends jealousy on Instagram!

Filikuri Bay

Himara has many beautiful beaches and Gjiri Filikuri is one of them: clean, beautiful & privat. Filikuri Beach is a small, pebbled stretch surrounded by steep cliffs, giving it a private and secluded feel. It’s a calm hideaway, perfect if you are looking for a quiet beach day. But to be honest, if you’re considering hiking to Filikuri Beach, it may be wise to reconsider. The trail is steep and can be hazardous due to loose rocks. A safer and more enjoyable option is to rent a boat or kayak from nearby Potam Beach.

This alternative not only ensures a safer journey but also allows you to appreciate the beautiful coastal scenery of the Albanian Riviera! We stumbled upon this Filikuri Bay through a hidden trail near our hotel, Argileos Rooms. The path requires a bit of an adventurous spirit, as there’s some light rock climbing involved at the end. But once you arrive, you’re greeted by a peaceful bay with crystal-clear water. It’s a great spot to spend a few hours, so don’t forget to bring lunch and a snorkel! Good to know: there are no bars or restaurants around Filikuri Bay.

Livadi Beach

Just a quick 10-minute drive from Himare, you’ll stumble upon the stunning Livadi Beach. This long, pebbly beach stretches out, offering plenty of space to relax, even during the bustling summer months. Whether you’re soaking up the sun or heading off for a little adventure, Livadi is the starting point for some great hikes, like the one leading to Aquarium Beach. Hidden among rocks, this gem of a spot boasts water so clear, you’ll feel like you’re swimming in a giant aquarium. Plus, no need to rough it on the pebbles! You can easily rent a sunbed and umbrella for the day, giving you all the comfort you need.

Looking for a drink and a small bite? Bar Invicta, right on the beach, adds to the magic of Livadi Beach. It’s got a super welcoming vibe, with friendly staff always ready to lend a hand and the prices are really affordable. And if that wasn’t enough, fresh fruit sellers are around all day, giving it that extra touch of paradise. Livadi Beach is also a fantastic choice for families, especially those with young kids. The restaurants are top-notch, the beach is beyond amazing and the newly added promenade makes it even more charming. And with Himare just a stone’s throw away, it’s the ideal spot for a laid-back beach holiday!

Himare or Ksamil - what is the best choice?

Choosing between Himare or Ksamil, what is the best choice? Both destinations offer beautiful beaches and clear waters, but your choice depends on the type of vacation experience you desire: vibrant and active in Ksamil, or peaceful and relaxing in Himarë. Let’s describe this further down below:

If you’re after a vibrant beach experience with plenty of activities and nightlife, Ksamil is your go-to destination. It’s perfect if you enjoy trendy beach clubs, lively atmospheres and a range of nearby tourist attractions, making it akin to popular European beach destinations but with its unique charm. On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter, more relaxing getaway where you can immerse yourself in nature and local culture without the crowds, Himarë offers a more tranquil alternative. It’s ideal if you are seeking solitude and a slower pace, with stunning landscapes and a rich blend of cultural influences.
